SAN FRANCISCO – OpenAI, the company known for its AI creations like ChatGPT, has decided to shut down its social media app, Sora. This app became popular last fall as a platform for sharing short videos made with artificial intelligence. However, it also raised concerns in Hollywood and beyond.

On Tuesday, OpenAI shared a brief message on social media, announcing, “We are saying goodbye to the Sora app.” They promised to provide more information soon about how users can save the content they created while using the app. “What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing,” they added.

Sora was launched in September as a way for OpenAI to tap into the growing trend of short-form video content, similar to what’s seen on TikTok and Instagram. The app allowed users to create videos by entering prompts, leading to a whole new world of creative expression.

Yet, as Sora gained traction, many advocacy groups, academics, and experts began to voice their concerns. They warned about the potential dangers of enabling users to create AI-generated videos on virtually any topic. These concerns included the risk of non-consensual images and realistic deepfakes, which could lead to misinformation and harm.

OpenAI faced significant backlash, especially after its AI tools produced videos featuring public figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Mister Rogers in inappropriate contexts. This outcry prompted OpenAI to tighten its policies on what could be created using Sora.

Disney, which had collaborated with OpenAI to bring its characters to Sora, also released a statement regarding the app’s shutdown. They expressed respect for OpenAI’s decision, saying, “We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it.” Disney noted their ongoing commitment to exploring AI technologies while ensuring they respect intellectual property and creators’ rights.

As the conversation around AI-generated content continues, the closure of Sora serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible technology use. With the rapid advancement of AI, it’s crucial for creators, users, and companies alike to prioritize ethical considerations and the potential impact of their innovations on society.
