NEW YORK – It is rare that a New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game gets preempted for anything, especially on network television.
However, on Sunday night, that was the case due to a rain delay at the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship, where top golfer Scottie Scheffler was in contention.

An NBC Sports spokesman confirmed that the decision to stick with golf coverage was made in consultation with both the PGA Tour and Major League Baseball. This decision came after the golf tournament resumed at 7:20 p.m. EST, with the network opting to continue coverage until the conclusion of the round or suspension due to darkness.
In a thrilling finish, Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 player, made an 8-foot par putt on the 18th hole, forcing a sudden-death playoff against Viktor Hovland on Monday morning. However, officials determined there wasn’t enough daylight to start the playoff, leading to a dramatic pause.
The final round had already been interrupted for 90 minutes due to storms at the TPC River Highlands course in Cromwell, Connecticut. During this time, NBC aired the conclusion of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, which faced its own delays. Haeran Ryu emerged victorious, winning by two strokes for her first major title.
Meanwhile, the Yankees-Red Sox game was also available for streaming on Peacock. NBC resumed coverage at 8:28 p.m. during the bottom of the fourth inning, with the Red Sox leading 2-0.
Viewers were still treated to an exciting game. Boston’s pitcher Sonny Gray had a no-hitter going through seven innings until the Yankees’ Amed Rosario broke the silence with a single in the eighth inning. New York rallied for two runs in the ninth, pushing the game into extra innings, where they initially took a 4-2 lead.
However, the Red Sox responded, scoring three runs in the 10th inning, culminating in Jarren Duran’s game-winning RBI single, sealing a 5-4 victory and completing a four-game sweep of the Yankees.
This season marks NBC’s first year broadcasting “Sunday Night Baseball.” It was also the first Yankees-Red Sox game aired on NBC since September 8, 1995.
