LOS ANGELES – The tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Matthew Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit show “Friends,” have come to light following the involvement of his personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa. Reports indicate that Perry paid Iwamasa $150,000 a year to assist him in daily tasks, but their relationship spiraled into something much darker.
On October 28, 2023, Iwamasa allegedly administered a fatal dose of ketamine to Perry before leaving him unattended. When he returned, Perry was found unresponsive in his Jacuzzi. This incident has led to significant legal repercussions for Iwamasa, who has become a critical witness in the case against several co-defendants involved in the distribution of the drug.
Iwamasa has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine resulting in death and is facing a potential prison sentence of three years and five months. This sentence is notably less than the 15 years sought for the drug dealer who provided the final doses of ketamine to Iwamasa.
Perry’s family has expressed deep anger and disappointment towards Iwamasa. Caitlin Morrison, Perry’s sister, conveyed her frustration in a letter to the judge, questioning Iwamasa’s actions on the night of her brother’s death. She stated, “I will never know if the lethal dose of ketamine was only lethal by accident.” She emphasized that Iwamasa’s decisions put Perry in a dangerous situation.
Perry’s mother, Suzanne Morrison, shared her feelings of betrayal, noting that the family trusted Iwamasa to help Perry in his battle against addiction. She stated, “We trusted a man without a conscience, and my son paid the price.” This sentiment highlights the tragic irony of trusting someone who ultimately failed to protect Perry.
Following Perry’s death, Iwamasa’s behavior raised alarms for the family. Suzanne Morrison recounted how Iwamasa maintained close contact with her, even sending songs and maps to the cemetery. His actions during this time led the family to feel disgusted, especially as he insisted on speaking at Perry’s funeral, a moment they believe was tainted by his involvement in their son’s death.
Investigations revealed that Iwamasa had been administering multiple injections of ketamine daily leading up to Perry’s death, despite initially withholding this information from law enforcement. The LA County Medical Examiner confirmed that ketamine was the primary cause of Perry’s death, with drowning as a secondary cause.
As the details of Perry’s death unravel, it has become clear that the truth was obscured by misinformation. Madeline Morrison, another sister, expressed her heartbreak upon learning the extent of Iwamasa’s involvement. She stated, “It felt like my brother died all over again. Everything I believed about the day he died—everything Kenny told us—was a lie.”
Matthew Perry, who passed away at the age of 54, was a beloved figure in television history, remembered not only for his comedic talent but also for his struggles with addiction. His mother poignantly remarked, “He was my heart and my soul,” emphasizing the deep loss felt by his family and fans alike.
