SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio man named Ronnie Jay Salas has been sentenced to a lengthy 70 years in prison for the murder of Andre Montera, a tragic incident that occurred on the Southwest Side in 2025. This sentencing, decided by a jury, highlights the serious consequences of violent crime and its impact on families and communities.
The events leading to this sentencing began on April 23, 2025, when Salas confronted Montera over suspicions regarding an affair with his girlfriend. Salas reportedly ambushed Montera outside his apartment on Ames Avenue, where he shot Montera in the stomach while he was sitting in his car.
Following the shooting, Montera was rushed to a local hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Salas fled the scene, prompting law enforcement to issue a Crime Stoppers post to locate him. U.S. Marshals eventually apprehended him in Kansas on May 15, 2025.
Toni Brantley, a family member, expressed her determination to ensure that Salas wouldn’t evade justice: “I was not going to let Texas take so long that this guy got to walk out the doors in Kansas. I just wasn’t.” This statement emphasizes the emotional weight that such cases carry for families affected by violent crime.
The process of bringing Salas to justice involved various stages, including court scheduling and transportation logistics, which can often delay proceedings, as noted by the governor’s office. However, a jury trial was held recently, beginning last week and concluding on October 23, when Salas was found guilty.
This case serves as a reminder of the serious repercussions of violence, not just for the victims and their families, but also for the community at large. As we reflect on this tragic story, it’s crucial to have open conversations about conflict resolution and the importance of seeking help in difficult situations.
