SAN ANTONIO – A tragic incident occurred last year in San Antonio that resulted in a young man losing his life due to a reckless decision made by a driver under the influence of alcohol. On a recent Monday, Arthur Hugo Ruiz, 29, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in this fatal crash, as reported by the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.

The crash took place just after midnight on March 8, 2025, at the intersection of West Travis and Northwest 24th streets. Ruiz was driving his Chevrolet Silverado truck when he ignored a stop sign and crashed into a Nissan Sentra, which had two individuals inside. The impact was severe, and the passenger, 24-year-old Victor Manuel Zarate-Avila, was ejected from the vehicle and later pronounced dead at the scene by the Bexar County Medical Examiner.

Following the crash, Ruiz attempted to flee on foot, but law enforcement quickly apprehended him a few blocks away. During questioning, he admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the accident, leading to his booking at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center that same day.

More than a year after the tragic event, Ruiz received a sentence of 12 years for intoxication manslaughter with a deadly weapon, highlighting the severe consequences of driving under the influence.

Interestingly, the driver of the Nissan, identified as Juan Escalante Linares, 29, also faced legal repercussions. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison for “failing to stop and render aid.” Like Ruiz, Linares fled the scene but later turned himself in three days after the crash. He was booked into the Bexar County jail on March 11, 2025, and charged with collision involving death on December 1, 2025.

Linares spent over 10 months in jail before being released on January 15 of this year. This case serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of accountability in tragic situations.
