SAN ANTONIO – Community members gathered Saturday evening to remember an 84-year-old man known for his kindness and commitment to helping others. This heartfelt tribute honored Manuel “Manny” Gomez Mendez Jr., who many considered a “good Samaritan” dedicated to serving his neighbors.

Mendez’s life was tragically cut short when he was found burning in the brush along a busy Southeast Side road on Saturday, March 28. His life, however, was a testament to selflessness and community service.

For years, Mendez worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those around him, often lending his time to local charities such as Fechner and HIS BridgeBuilders. His friend, Melvin Fechner, shared, “He made a big difference in a lot of people’s lives, mine included.” Fechner highlighted Mendez’s dedication to “being with God’s people, doing the work of God, to love God and love his neighbors.”

Mendez was known for his willingness to go above and beyond to assist individuals in need. Fechner described him as “like a roving good Samaritan,” always looking for opportunities to befriend those in distress and see how he could help them. Whether it was providing food, clothing, or even medical assistance, Mendez was there for his community.

Beyond his community efforts, Mendez was also a devoted father to two sons. His legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire those who knew him.

As friends and family remember Mendez, they celebrate a life devoted to helping others, a true reflection of a good Samaritan in today’s world.
