SAN ANTONIO – A woman from San Antonio, Monica Padilla, has been sentenced to 13 years in federal prison for embezzling a large sum of money while she was employed as a bookkeeper. This information comes from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
Padilla, who is 49 years old, reportedly stole money from different businesses during three distinct periods between June 2021 and February 2025. The DOJ announced the details in a news release, highlighting the serious nature of her actions.
Using her access to various bank and credit accounts, Padilla employed several methods to carry out her fraudulent activities. She wasn’t just stealing small amounts; federal officials estimate that she misappropriated approximately $595,000 in total.
So, what did Padilla do with all that stolen money? She used it for a variety of personal expenses, including remodeling her home, buying Disney merchandise, and even placing numerous DoorDash orders. Notably, she funded a trip to California that cost over $5,700. These purchases illustrate a troubling pattern of behavior, where she prioritized her desires over her responsibilities.
Padilla’s legal troubles began when she was first indicted on 30 counts on August 16, 2023. However, her issues did not end there. In February 2025, while under bond, she managed to find work as a remote bookkeeper and defrauded yet another business, demonstrating a blatant disregard for the law.
U.S. Attorney Simmons commented on the impact of Padilla’s actions, stating, “An embezzling bookkeeper can do incalculable harm not just to the victimized businesses but to the lives of many innocent people. The monetary harm is usually just the tip of the iceberg in these types of cases.” This highlights the far-reaching consequences of financial crimes, which can affect not only companies but also their employees and communities.
