SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County man has received a life sentence for a murder committed in 2017, just weeks after he was sentenced for another murder case. This case highlights the serious and often tragic consequences of violent crime.
Shandrick Buckley, 39, was sentenced on a Friday for the murder of José Gustavo Hernandez, a crime that shocked the community. According to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, Buckley “violently assaulted” Hernandez on August 9, 2017, outside a local shelter known as Haven for Hope.
Surveillance footage played a crucial role in the case, showing Buckley following Hernandez before attacking him. The video revealed a shocking scene: Buckley knocked Hernandez to the ground and continued to stomp on him repeatedly before walking away. Tragically, Hernandez was found unresponsive with severe injuries. He was hospitalized and placed on life support but ultimately passed away later that month.
Consecutive Life Sentences
In a separate case earlier in September, Buckley was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for another murder. This incident occurred in 2019 when he killed a former cellmate named Alexander Wise inside the Bexar County Adult Detention Center. At the time of this second murder, Buckley was already incarcerated for the 2017 murder of Hernandez.
The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Buckley will serve both life sentences consecutively, meaning he will spend the rest of his life in prison without any chance of release. This decision reflects the severity of his actions and the impact they had on the victims and their families.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violence and the importance of community safety. While the justice system works to hold individuals accountable, it is crucial for communities to engage in conversations about preventing violence and supporting those affected by crime.
