BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Recently, two men were arrested for stealing and selling over $100,000 worth of construction materials. According to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, this theft highlights a growing issue in the area.
Details of the Arrest
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office made the arrests of Rodrin Alexis Garcia Rivera, 31, and Pedro Lozano Moreno, 68, after witnessing a sale of the stolen materials. Both individuals are now facing serious charges of engaging in organized criminal activity.
What Was Stolen?
Authorities recovered more than 1,000 circuit breakers and about 800 copper wires, each valued around $100. These materials were traced back to various residences and a storage facility in the area.
The Growing Problem of Construction Theft
Sheriff Salazar noted an increase in thefts related to electrical breakers. He explained that in new home construction areas, thieves often target multiple homes at once. “We’ve seen instances in new home construction where you have six or eight brand new homes side by side on a street, thieves would come through and wipe out the whole neighborhood,” he stated.
Since the start of the year, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office estimates that over $250,000 worth of construction materials have been stolen in San Antonio alone. Salazar believes this figure might only scratch the surface of the actual problem, as thefts occur frequently.
Advice for Builders
To combat this issue, Sheriff Salazar recommends that new home builders take extra precautions. He advises against leaving materials in garages or visible outside. If possible, builders should arrange for materials to be delivered only on the day they will be installed.
“Don’t have them delivered until the day they’re going to be installed,” he said, emphasizing that this could significantly reduce the risk of theft.
Using Technology to Fight Theft
While lights and surveillance cameras may not prevent theft entirely, Sheriff Salazar mentioned that they can aid in investigations after a crime has occurred. This can help law enforcement track down the culprits and recover stolen items.
