In December 2024, Rangel, who was 16 years old at the time, and a group of friends arrived at Alvarado’s girlfriend’s home. Alvarado and his girlfriend were both inside.
Rangel and the group had a long-standing dispute with Alvarado’s girlfriend’s brother, who was their original target. This conflict escalated when Rangel and his friends started making threats and showing weapons at the residence.
Surveillance footage captured Rangel running into the alley behind the house before he fired multiple shots through the back door. Alvarado and his girlfriend’s family were trying to escape when one of the bullets struck Alvarado in the heart, according to the DA’s office.
Given the gravity of the crime, a judge ruled that Rangel would be tried as an adult. He received a 20-year sentence for the six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which will be served concurrently with his murder sentence.
