In a troubling incident that unfolded on a Route 2 bus in downtown, a man named Rios experienced a violent confrontation when a woman attempted to steal his phone. This event took place on Monday, October 5, and has raised serious concerns about safety on public transportation.

Rios, who relies on the bus for transportation due to a previous neck injury that has left him unable to drive, boarded the bus around 9:20 p.m. after visiting a convenience store. He noticed some passengers arguing but chose to keep to himself. However, his quiet ride quickly turned chaotic when a person wearing a red hoodie approached him and tried to snatch his phone.

During the struggle, Rios initially thought he was being confronted by a man but later realized it was a woman. He recounted the terrifying experience: “I think she grabbed me by my neck, and she pulled me to the floor. We struggled. I landed on the floor, and all of a sudden, she starts kicking my neck, my head.”

The assault left Rios with six broken ribs and extensive injuries that exacerbated his existing chronic pain. After being rushed to the hospital, he spent several days in the ICU, struggling with feelings of helplessness and anger. “I started to cry. I felt helpless and angry,” he said, reflecting on the emotional toll the incident took on him.

Rios is left questioning the motives behind the attack. “I just want to know why, what was the reason? Just for a phone?” he asked, bewildered by the senseless violence. Compounding his distress, he noted that no one intervened during the attack, including the bus driver. “Nobody came to help me. It was like everyone just kept ignoring it,” he lamented.

This incident has not only shaken Rios but also highlighted broader safety concerns on public transportation. He mentioned having witnessed other troubling behavior on VIA buses, including harassment and drug use. “I don’t feel safe no more,” he admitted, expressing his anxiety about riding the bus again.

Because he relies on public transportation, Rios is now considering alternative options, like Uber or Lyft, although he is apprehensive about the added costs. He has since urged VIA to enhance safety measures on nighttime routes and to take stronger actions to protect passengers from violence.

VIA has confirmed that Erika Leanda Chandler, 30, was arrested in connection with the incident, facing charges of assault causing bodily injury. Rios has requested surveillance footage from the night of the attack, hoping it may provide further clarity and support his call for improved safety measures.

“I was in dire need. I needed help, but I couldn’t. I just don’t want anyone else to have to deal with this. Something must be done,” he stated, voicing a common sentiment among many public transit users who desire a safer commuting environment.
