In a tragic incident that has shaken the community of Erie, Pennsylvania, a gunman identified as Matthew Stone Sr., 45, has shot and killed eight individuals, including six family members. The harrowing event occurred at a residence on a Friday, with the shooter ultimately taking his own life. Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook confirmed the identities of the victims, emphasizing the profound loss felt by the families involved.
The deceased family members include Michelle Stone, 44; Angelina Stone, 24, who was expecting a child; Jonathan Stone, 19; and Matthew Stone, 21, among others. Tragically, two young children—a 5-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl—also lost their lives, although their names have not been disclosed due to state law.
During a memorial service, family friend Julius Windham shared the devastating news that his granddaughter, Amarianna, was one of the toddlers who perished. Windham noted that Angelina Stone, the mother of both deceased children, was also a victim, highlighting the deep familial ties within this tragic narrative.
Lora Roberts, 37, and Twila Tanner, 51, were also among the victims. Roberts was known for her compassionate nature, frequently assisting her niece during her pregnancy. A dedicated volunteer, she had previously expressed her concerns about violence in Erie through social media, urging community members to choose kindness and support one another.
The police investigation revealed disturbing audio evidence, with muffled gunshots detected just before two women, presumed to be distressed, arrived at the scene and began knocking on the door. Tragically, Matthew Stone emerged and shot at them as they fled, returning inside shortly thereafter. Both Roberts and Tanner were killed outside the residence, raising further questions about the circumstances that led to this shocking act of violence.
While the police have not disclosed a clear motive for the shooting, Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah suggested that mental health issues may have played a significant role. Investigators are currently reviewing the cell phones of the women who were killed outside the home and are in the process of interviewing family members to gather more context regarding the events leading up to this tragedy.
As the Erie community grapples with the aftermath of this horrific event, the stories of the victims and their contributions to the community serve as poignant reminders of the fragility of life and the importance of support and compassion in times of distress. Erie, located approximately 120 miles north of Pittsburgh, is now left to seek healing and understanding in the wake of such profound loss.
