ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – The Buffalo Bills opened their new stadium, officially named Highmark Stadium, with an electrifying performance from quarterback Josh Allen, who quickly made the venue feel like his own. In a thrilling matchup against the Detroit Lions, Allen threw three touchdown passes and added two rushing touchdowns, leading the Bills to a 41-31 victory in the first regular-season game at the $2.1 billion facility.
The emotional weight of the occasion hit Allen just before kickoff, during the performances of the U.S. and Canadian national anthems. “I caught myself taking it all in and understanding how cool what I get to do. My job is the coolest in the world,” he reflected. “It’s everything I ever wanted, to be the quarterback of an NFL franchise. I’m just very fortunate to have ended up in Buffalo.”
Having rewritten many of Buffalo’s scoring and passing records during his first eight seasons at the old Highmark Stadium, the 30-year-old Allen appeared right at home in the team’s new digs. He scored the first touchdown at the new stadium with a 1-yard plunge just 5:51 minutes into the game. His second rushing touchdown, a 2-yard run, marked the 83rd of his career, tying him for 18th on the NFL’s all-time list alongside Jim Taylor.
Allen’s performance on Thursday night was a continuation of his impressive play this season, following a four-touchdown showcase in Buffalo’s season opener against New Orleans. “Anytime the ball’s in his hands, good things happen. And yeah, I love that guy,” praised Bills coach Joe Brady, who opted to receive the opening kickoff, demonstrating his confidence in Allen and the offense. “I wanted us to take the ball in this environment and set the tone. That was the start that we needed.”
The Bills’ offense was unstoppable early on, scoring on each of their first four possessions. Allen connected with Josh Palmer for a 43-yard touchdown, followed by a 2-yard reception from Dawson Knox and a 16-yarder from Dalton Kincaid. Allen completed 20 of 31 passes for 248 yards and added 69 yards on the ground, while James Cook contributed significantly with 134 rushing yards, sealing the game with a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:50 left on the clock.
Buffalo’s 41 points marked the third-most scored by a team in its first regular-season game at a new stadium, trailing only Dallas (44 points in 1971) and Miami (42 points in 1987). Unfortunately for the Lions, their injury-depleted defense struggled to contain the Bills, while their offensive line faced challenges in both protecting quarterback Jared Goff and opening running lanes for Jahmyr Gibbs.
“You play an opponent as potent as this, you don’t have the luxury of spitting and sputtering early,” said Lions coach Dan Campbell, reflecting on his team’s rocky start that saw them fall behind 21-0. “We needed to play. It didn’t have to be spotless, but it certainly needed to be a lot cleaner than that.”
The Lions’ defense allowed the Bills to score 27 points and amass 299 yards in the first half alone, finishing the game with a total of 446 yards allowed. Despite a brief rally that cut Buffalo’s lead to 34-24 following a 1-yard touchdown catch by rookie tight end Sam LaPorta, the Lions’ offense faltered as they were forced to punt after failing to convert on a critical possession.
Goff finished the game with 26 completions on 38 attempts for 327 yards and four touchdowns, with standout performances from wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (nine catches, 142 yards, two touchdowns) and Gibbs, who scored on an 11-yard catch but was limited to just 52 rushing yards. “I think we knew what type of game it was going to be, and we dug ourselves in that hole,” Goff admitted. “Against a team like that with the offense they have, it was really tough to get back into it.”
In terms of injuries, Lions defensive back Avonte Maddox did not return after hurting his right foot during a collision in the second quarter. The Bills were also affected, losing defensive lineman Ed Oliver to a hip injury during warmups, and wide receiver DJ Moore was ruled out after sustaining a shoulder and head injury.
Looking ahead, the Lions will host the New York Jets on September 27, while the Bills will face the New England Patriots the same day.
