SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio man was sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection with a 2024 crash that killed his passenger, according to court records.
Jose Luis Ibarra, 25, was convicted of intoxication manslaughter after authorities reported he was driving at a staggering 116 mph while under the influence before crashing into the back of a pickup truck in the 500 block of Historic Old Highway 90.
On June 28, 2024, San Antonio police stated that Ibarra was behind the wheel of a black 2023 Dodge Charger traveling northeast when it collided with a 1999 Ford F-350. The impact was so severe that the Charger caught fire immediately after the crash.
The passenger in Ibarra’s vehicle, identified as Alexandra Jasmine Vargas, sustained severe burns and broken bones from the accident. Emergency responders transported her to a local hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
According to court documents, Ibarra admitted to an officer that he was speeding when the truck abruptly stopped in front of him. Investigators found no skid marks or any evidence indicating he attempted to brake or steer away from the impending collision.
A blood test conducted after the accident revealed that Ibarra had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.166, which is more than twice the legal limit. Additionally, data retrieved from the Charger’s airbag control module indicated that the accelerator had been fully depressed up to half a second before the impact, confirming the vehicle was indeed traveling at 116 mph at the time of the crash.
This tragic incident underscores the dangers of impaired driving and excessive speed, which can lead to devastating consequences not only for the driver but also for innocent passengers. It serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety and the responsibility drivers have to themselves and others.
