JUNEAU, Alaska – In a surprising turn of events during the Alaska primary elections, a candidate sharing the same name as the incumbent U.S. senator has advanced to the general election. This race is poised to be one of the most scrutinized in the nation this coming fall.
Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher from Petersburg, Alaska, successfully secured a spot in the November elections after finishing among the top four candidates in the August 18 primary. He will compete in a ranked-choice contest against the incumbent, Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, and Democratic former U.S. Representative Mary Peltola.
The challenger, Dan J. Sullivan, initially faced legal hurdles in his quest for candidacy, as allegations arose suggesting he intended to confuse voters. These claims were primarily advanced by the incumbent and his Republican allies. However, after a legal challenge, the state Supreme Court ruled in favor of Dan J. Sullivan, allowing him to appear on the ballot.
Despite his wishes to be listed as Republican Dan J. Sullivan, the Division of Elections registered him as Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., with no party affiliation. In contrast, the incumbent is officially listed as Dan S. Sullivan, Republican and incumbent.
As of now, attempts to reach either candidate for comments have gone unanswered. Notably, former President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Sen. Sullivan, labeling the other Sullivan’s candidacy as a deceptive ploy. In response, Dan J. Sullivan criticized the incumbent for aligning with Trump’s endorsement, asserting that the former president prioritizes tariffs over pressing issues like the cost of living for Alaskans.
The primary elections also included critical races for Alaska’s lone U.S. House seat and the governorship. In the congressional race, Republican Rep. Nick Begich has advanced alongside independent Bill Hill, although the final slot remains too close to call. Meanwhile, in the gubernatorial race, Democrats Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins and Tom Begich, who is related to Nick Begich, have also moved forward, alongside Republican Bernadette Wilson.
The state of Alaska allows absentee and overseas ballots to be counted up to 10 days after the primary, provided they are postmarked by election day. This means that the final outcomes could shift as more ballots are tallied.
With both the incumbent Sullivan and Peltola being prominent figures with significant fundraising and statewide recognition, this Senate race is expected to be highly competitive. The introduction of Dan J. Sullivan into this mix adds an intriguing twist, especially given Alaska’s ranked-choice voting system, which could play a pivotal role in determining the eventual winner.
