SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police, along with Crime Stoppers, are investigating a troubling case involving a 75-year-old woman whose debit card was exploited while she was recovering from surgery. This incident occurred nearly two months ago, and authorities are seeking leads to help apprehend the suspect.
On June 28, the woman underwent surgery at North Central Baptist Hospital and was under heavy medication. During her hospital stay, she received a phone call from someone claiming to be a representative from Security Service Federal Credit Union (SSFCU).
According to the news release from Crime Stoppers, the caller convinced the woman that her debit card had been compromised. Following this, the suspect appeared at the hospital and provided her with a temporary debit card in exchange for her original card and PIN.
Unfortunately, the suspect later used the woman’s original debit card at various ATMs and retail locations, which resulted in a significant financial loss for her.
SSFCU expressed deep concern for the woman’s experience and urged all customers to be cautious. They recommend that if anyone feels they are being scammed, they should contact the bank directly at 1-888-415-7878.
To help bring the perpetrator to justice, Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest in this case.
