LAS VEGAS – In a dramatic turn of events during a recent court hearing, jurors listened to Duane “Keffe D” Davis recount his 2008 interview with detectives, where he implicated his nephew Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson in the fatal shooting of the legendary hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur. This interview has now become a crucial piece of evidence in the ongoing trial against Davis, who is accused of orchestrating the 1996 murder of the 25-year-old rapper in Las Vegas.

During the interview, Davis described how he was in a white Cadillac with Anderson and two other men. They drove up alongside Shakur’s car, which also had hip-hop mogul Marion “Suge” Knight inside. Davis recalled, “If we would have been on my side, I would have blasted,” indicating he would have fired the gun had their vehicles been positioned differently. Instead, he passed the weapon to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith, who declined to use it. Ultimately, Anderson took the gun and fired the shots that killed Shakur.

As the audio of the interview played in court, jurors listened intently while Shakur’s family members observed quietly. This was the first time Davis openly discussed his involvement in the shooting with authorities. Prosecutors emphasized that they would rely heavily on Davis’ admissions from this interview, alongside statements he made in various podcasts and his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend.”

Interestingly, Davis had previously told the FBI that his nephew was not involved in Shakur’s murder and even speculated that figures like Sean “Diddy” Combs or Knight could have had a role. Despite these conflicting statements, Davis has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. His lawyer has described the prosecution’s narrative as “fiction,” claiming that Davis was “full of crap” when discussing his involvement, and asserted that investigators didn’t have enough evidence to support their case.

The detectives originally approached Davis in connection with the 1997 murder of Shakur’s rival, the Notorious B.I.G., in an investigation that remains unsolved. During the interview, the detectives assured Davis that their conversation would remain confidential, stating “Nothing you say today can be used against you.” However, the prosecution argues that Davis later undermined this agreement by speaking publicly about the shooting.

Prosecutors allege that Shakur’s murder was an act of revenge for an earlier altercation involving Anderson and Shakur’s entourage at the MGM Grand after a Mike Tyson fight. On the night of the shooting, Davis claimed that he and his companions saw Shakur hanging out of a black BMW, prompting Anderson to open fire.

Despite the tragedy surrounding his death, Tupac Shakur remains an iconic figure in hip-hop culture, celebrated for his profound impact on music and society. He was at the peak of his career when he was killed, and his legacy continues to influence artists and fans alike to this day.
