This past weekend, two very different dinosaur-themed movies made their debut in North American theaters, both vying for box office success. However, they couldn’t quite compete with the reigning champion, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which continued its impressive run at the top of the charts.
“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” aimed at younger audiences, and “The End of Oak Street,” a PG-13 action film featuring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, battled closely for third place. According to early estimates, “The End of Oak Street” edged out its competitor with approximately $21 million, while “Paw Patrol” followed closely at $20.5 million.
Despite their efforts, neither film stood a chance against the blockbuster “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” In its third weekend, the superhero flick raked in another $70 million, boosting its domestic total to an astounding $785.8 million, making it the fourth-largest domestic release in history. Additionally, with $118.7 million from international markets, it has surpassed the $2 billion mark globally, joining an elite group of films to achieve this milestone.
In second place, “The Odyssey” continues to perform well, grossing $23.2 million over the weekend. Directed by Christopher Nolan, this epic has now crossed the $1.2 billion mark worldwide, thanks to strong performances in both domestic and international theaters.
“The End of Oak Street” exceeded initial expectations with its $21 million opening from 3,446 locations, and it also collected $26 million internationally, bringing its global total to $47 million against an $80 million production budget. This film, which transports suburban parents into a prehistoric world, received positive reviews from critics, holding an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, though audience reactions were more muted, reflected in a B CinemaScore.
Meanwhile, “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” released in 3,545 theaters, attracted family audiences and achieved an A CinemaScore from its viewers. Its global total has now reached $69 million, continuing the franchise’s popularity.
In the top five, the Katseye documentary “Katseye: Wild Hearts” earned $4 million, while other newcomers like “Six: The Musical Live” and “The Brink of War” also managed to place in the top 10.
As the summer season winds down, the box office has shown resilience, with ticket sales surpassing $4.2 billion — about 5.7% higher than the pre-pandemic summer of 2019. Although this summer may not surpass the record set in 2013, industry experts suggest it will still rank among the top five summers of all time.
