CLEVELAND – In a heartfelt moment that resonated with fans and teammates alike, New York Mets rookie Jefry Yan made his major league debut on Wednesday night, showcasing not just his talent but also his vibrant personality. After striking out the very first batter he faced, Yan leaped into the air with enthusiasm, landing on the mound and celebrating with a slap to the grass, a true testament to the joy of the game.

At 29 years old, Yan brought a unique energy to the Mets’ 6-5 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. “Honestly, I was really excited. I was also a little nervous,” he expressed through a translator, encapsulating the mixed emotions that come with stepping onto the big stage for the first time.

Yan’s viral moment came when he faced pinch-hitter Angel Martínez, who was caught looking at an 88.7 mph slider for a called third strike to start the sixth inning. Following the strikeout, Yan celebrated with a familiar routine—standing tall with arms raised high, a celebration he had previously executed during spring training earlier this year.

“Once I had him with two strikes, I said, you know what, I’m going to throw that slider,” Yan recounted. “And if I freeze him, which is exactly what I did, I celebrated accordingly.” His ability to perform under pressure was evident as he navigated through a challenging situation, where the Guardians had loaded the bases following his strikeout.

Despite the pressure, Yan remained composed, managing to escape the jam without allowing any runs, thanks to his second strikeout and an inning-ending ground ball. “Once I was able to get out of the inning, I said, you know, I can finally breathe right here,” he reflected, highlighting the weight of the moment.

Mets interim manager Andy Green praised Yan’s performance, stating, “It’s real stuff. It’s really impressive. To get out of a bases-loaded jam, get your first punchout, just excited for him. He deserves that.” This endorsement from the coaching staff further solidified Yan’s promising future in the league.

As Yan left the mound after the inning, he couldn’t help but express his excitement, slapping his glove in celebration. Although Cleveland fans responded with boos, Yan remained undeterred. “If they want to yell at me, if they want to boo me, they can do whatever they want,” he stated confidently. “I’m in my zone. And yeah, I’m going to enjoy my game any way that I want to.”

Yan’s debut serves as a reminder of the passion and excitement that embodies Major League Baseball. For fans and players alike, moments like these are what make the sport so special, illustrating not just skill, but the joy and love for the game that transcends statistics and records.
