The La Vernia football team is back on the practice field with momentum from last season and plenty of change ahead. After a remarkable journey that culminated in a deep playoff run, the Bears are now preparing for new challenges and opportunities as they set their sights on the upcoming season.
La Vernia’s successful campaign last year saw them advance to the playoffs, only to face a tough defeat against Kilgore, which ended their aspirations for a state title. This experience, however, has fueled their determination to build on that success while navigating a new district landscape and integrating several fresh faces into their roster.
As practice continued Tuesday in La Vernia, key players and coaches were hard at work preparing for the challenges ahead. Senior quarterback Cooper Null, alongside senior defensive back Matthew Lindsey and head coach Brian Null, is committed to leading the program into this new chapter.
“Working hard in the offseason, getting ready for my senior year, there’s a lot of weight on my shoulders,” said Cooper Null. “I’m just grinding for my brothers and being a leader for them.” Such sentiments highlight the sense of camaraderie and responsibility that permeates the team.
Head coach Brian Null emphasized the importance of focus and dedication, stating, “I got to focus on La Vernia. That’s what we tell these guys.” This mantra underlines the team’s ethos of unity and determination as they prepare for the season.
One of the significant challenges facing the Bears will be leveraging last year’s playoff experience to foster growth and development among the players. With the graduation of 10 starters from the defensive unit last season, the team is tasked with filling those gaps while also integrating new talent from the junior varsity squad.
The upcoming season promises to be an exciting one for La Vernia as they strive to build upon their past successes and forge a new identity within their competitive landscape. As they continue to train and prepare, the Bears remain focused on teamwork, leadership, and the pursuit of excellence on the field.
