The superhero movie landscape just got a massive jolt with the release of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day“. Over its opening weekend, this film shattered box office records, raking in an impressive $355 million in North America alone, making it the second-biggest opening weekend ever, right behind “Avengers: Endgame” which debuted at $357 million in 2019.

Globally, “Brand New Day” earned a staggering $927 million, with $572 million coming from international markets. China alone contributed $121 million to this total, showcasing the film’s vast appeal.

Tom Holland has once again proven his prowess as Spider-Man. His previous film, “No Way Home“, grossed over $1.9 billion globally, making it one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. It was also a milestone, being the first film to cross the $1 billion mark since the pandemic began.

Interestingly, the success of “Brand New Day” coincides with another major release featuring Holland and Zendaya: Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey“. This film slid to second place in its third weekend, earning $51 million. Together, these films contributed to the biggest weekend ever for North American theaters, with an estimated $430 million in total ticket sales.

The excitement for “Brand New Day” was palpable, with a record-breaking $168 million on its opening day alone. This surpassed the previous record held by “Endgame” which opened with $157 million on its first Friday. The film’s opening weekend beat “No Way Home“, which opened with $260 million in December 2021.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, “Brand New Day” had a hefty production budget of $225 million. Despite initial concerns that it might not attract the same enthusiasm as its predecessor, audience interest was remarkably strong. The film has garnered a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore, indicating a positive reception from both critics and viewers.

Demographics show that the audience was predominantly male (about 61%), with a significant portion under the age of 25. According to PostTrak exit polls, the largest age group was between 18 and 24, accounting for 36% of the audience. Approximately 24.1 million people attended the film over the weekend.

This remarkable opening has also set a record for Sony Pictures, with Tom Rothman, the Chairman and CEO, praising Tom Holland for his impressive performance in both films.

Despite some skepticism about the superhero genre’s longevity, films like “No Way Home” and “Deadpool & Wolverine“, which grossed over $1.3 billion, have shown that when done right, superhero movies can still captivate audiences.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, stated that the film’s debut reflects the enduring appeal of Marvel’s characters and their connection with fans globally. Producer Amy Pascal echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the audience’s hunger for stories that are both spectacular and deeply human.

This year has witnessed a resurgence in moviegoing from younger audiences, who have propelled the success of films like “Obsession” and “The Drama“, which also stars Zendaya. Their enthusiasm has contributed to a thriving summer box office, with “Spider-Man” benefiting from the momentum of “The Odyssey“, which has earned $395.5 million domestically.

As the summer movie season progresses, analysts predict it could surpass $4 billion for the first time since 2023, with “Spider-Man” leading the charge. Paul Dergarabedian from Rentrak remarked that this summer could potentially set records for the box office.

Here’s a quick look at the top 10 movies by domestic box office for the weekend:

1. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day“, $355 million.

2. “The Odyssey“, $51 million.

3. “Toy Story 5“, $6.3 million.

4. “Minions & Monsters“, $5.8 million.
