NEW YORK – Vincent Pastore, a veteran actor known for his memorable roles as mobsters, has passed away at the age of 80. He was best known for portraying Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero on the critically acclaimed series “The Sopranos.”
Bob McGowan, who managed Pastore throughout his time on “The Sopranos,” shared the sad news with The Associated Press. He learned of Pastore’s death on Saturday through fellow actor Vincent Curatola, who also appeared on the show.
According to McGowan, Pastore was found in his home on City Island in New York after not being in contact for several days. He had been trying to reach out to Pastore regarding a potential job opportunity.
“He was the most loyal client, and he always gave to charity,” McGowan stated. “He was the kind of guy who would help anybody, which is rare in my business.”
Robert Attermann, who represented Pastore for over 30 years, highlighted that while Pastore will always be remembered as “Big Pussy,” he was so much more than that. “Vinny was one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever known,” Attermann conveyed in an email to the AP. “He treated everyone with warmth and respect, never turning down a fan who wanted a photograph or an autograph. He genuinely appreciated the people who supported him and always made them feel valued.”
Attermann emphasized Pastore’s passion for acting, noting that he was always eager to support and guide younger actors. “He took the time to offer guidance and support whenever he could,” he said.
Michael Imperioli, a longtime friend and collaborator, shared his memories of Pastore on Instagram. He reflected on their long friendship, stating, “We did lots of work together and traveled all over the USA as well as Italy and Australia. Lots of good times. Lots of laughs. Vinny was a kind-hearted brother who cared deeply about his family and friends. I will miss him always.”
Pastore’s film career dates back to the 1980s, with notable appearances in classic films such as “Goodfellas” and “Awakenings,” both released in 1990. He often portrayed gangsters, with his role as Bonpensiero being one of his most iconic. This character was a close friend of Tony Soprano who ultimately becomes an FBI informant, a storyline that captivated audiences for 30 episodes.
Born in the Bronx and raised in suburban New Rochelle, New York, Pastore enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He later pursued higher education at Pace University, laying the foundation for his successful acting career.
He is survived by his daughter, Renee Pastore, who carries on his legacy.
