Imagine being at the beach, having fun, and suddenly getting swept away by a powerful wave. This is exactly what happened to 10-year-old Nathaniel when he was at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California. Luckily, a quick-thinking lifeguard named Ryder Williams was there to save him.

Nathaniel was standing in shallow water when a big wave knocked him off his feet. His father, Sumit Rai, was in Dallas and learned about the incident through a phone call with his son later that evening. Nathaniel told his dad he had drowned briefly and felt unconscious, which understandably left Rai feeling shocked and worried.

Rai expressed immense gratitude towards Ryder, the 16-year-old lifeguard who jumped into the treacherous waters to save his son. “He ran into that water despite those conditions that are deadly,” Rai said. “It is not safe for him to go into that water. So he’s risking his own safety.”

In a dramatic rescue caught on video, Ryder quickly noticed Nathaniel’s struggle. “After the first wave, I was unable to pull him out because he was limp and the waves were pushing so hard,” he recalled. But Ryder didn’t give up. He dove into the waves, holding onto Nathaniel tightly as they were both buffeted by the surf.

With help from another lifeguard and a few bystanders, Ryder managed to bring Nathaniel back to shore. Fortunately, the boy only suffered minor issues, like getting sand in his lungs, and was later released to his family after a medical evaluation.

Despite being physically okay, Nathaniel is struggling emotionally with the memory of the event. His father shared that the experience has been troubling for his son, making it hard for him to sleep. “He’s still been thinking about it a lot. It’s on his mind,” Rai explained.

Rai hopes to thank Ryder personally for his heroic act, expressing that he feels he can never fully repay the lifeguard for what he did. “What he did, I can never ever repay. I’m forever grateful,” he said.

This incredible story is a reminder of the bravery and quick actions of lifeguards who risk their lives to save others. It highlights the importance of water safety, especially during times when conditions can be unpredictable and dangerous.
