SAN ANTONIO – Rita Elizondo, the former president of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, has recently escaped jail time after pleading no contest to the serious charge of financially abusing her elderly mother. This case highlights critical issues surrounding elder financial abuse, a growing concern in our society.
At 73 years old, Elizondo was sentenced to six years of deferred adjudication. As part of her plea agreement, she is required to repay her 104-year-old mother, Maria, a total of $14,000. This plea deal was sanctioned by the 399th Criminal District Court on Tuesday, emphasizing the legal system’s response to financial exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
In addition to the financial restitution, Elizondo must complete 120 hours of community service, as outlined in the court records. This ruling reflects a growing awareness of the need for accountability and rehabilitation in cases involving elder abuse.
Elizondo, who has a long-standing career as a political consultant and served as the president of SAHCC from 1998 to 2004, was indicted late last year. Accusations surfaced that she had drained tens of thousands of dollars from her mother’s bank accounts while exercising her power of attorney. This situation raises alarming questions about trust and integrity within familial relationships, particularly when financial control is involved.
Elizondo pleaded no contest to the charge of financial abuse of the elderly, which involved amounts ranging between $2,500 and $30,000. As part of her plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to waive additional charges, which included misapplication of financial property and exploitation of the elderly, indicating a negotiated resolution to the case.
In a poignant statement, Maria expressed, “At my age, every postponement carries a weight. No amount of money can restore what was broken.” This underscores the emotional and psychological impact of financial abuse on elderly victims, who often feel powerless and betrayed by those they trust.
Unauthorized Transactions Revealed
The financial transactions in question included unauthorized cash withdrawals of $5,000 and $2,000, as well as charges for skin rejuvenation services amounting to $910, which were made in Elizondo’s name. Furthermore, there was a significant mortgage payment of $17,797.53 processed within a two-week period in March and April 2024. Such transactions illustrate the serious nature of the alleged financial abuse and the extent to which Maria’s resources were compromised.
In response to these unauthorized transactions, Maria sent Elizondo a demand letter, highlighting the significant financial harm caused and revoking her power of attorney. Maria demanded repayment of more than $48,000, showcasing the gravity of the situation and the impact of financial exploitation on her well-being.
