Kaylee Hottle, a talented 18-year-old deaf actress celebrated for her roles in the “Godzilla” films, tragically passed away in a car accident in Maryland early Tuesday morning. The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office reported the heartbreaking news.

Hottle was a passenger in a vehicle that veered off the road and collided with a culvert in Ijamsville before 3 a.m. The driver, a 19-year-old man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital, while another passenger chose not to seek medical treatment. Investigators believe excessive speed contributed to the tragic incident, which is still under investigation.

Hottle was a native signer of American Sign Language (ASL), coming from a family where everyone is deaf. Her parents, Joshua and Ketsi Hottle, shared emotional videos on social media expressing their grief over their daughter’s death.

“Kaylee’s mom and four siblings are crushed,” her father expressed in ASL in a video recorded at an airport. “They are together at home, grieving. I am on my way to Maryland to bring Kaylee’s body back home.”

Tragically, Hottle’s heart stopped before she reached the hospital, having been transported via air ambulance from the accident scene. “I am very grateful for the 18 years we had together — and wish we had more,” her father shared.

In a remarkable display of compassion, Joshua Hottle expressed forgiveness to the driver involved. “I have forgiven you,” he said. “Don’t let this incident ruin the rest of your life.”

Hottle’s mother reflected in ASL that she still feels Kaylee’s spirit with them.

In the “Godzilla” films, Hottle portrayed Jia, an orphaned girl who forms a unique bond with Kong, the giant gorilla, using sign language to communicate. Her performances were widely praised, showcasing both her acting talent and the importance of representation for the deaf community.

Her co-star, Millie Bobby Brown, expressed her sorrow on Instagram, saying, “I’m so devastated to hear this. You will be deeply missed, Kaylee.”

Alexander Skarsgård, another co-star, learned ASL to communicate with Hottle and praised her professionalism and adaptability in the film. In a 2024 interview, Hottle shared that she hadn’t been familiar with monster movies before her casting, but her father helped her discover the genre.

Before her breakout role, Hottle appeared in an episode of “Magnum P.I.” and was slated to star in the upcoming film “What Doesn’t Kill Us.”

Fellow deaf actors, including Alaqua Cox and Oscar winners Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur, shared their condolences and heartbreak over the loss of such a promising talent.

The Texas School for the Deaf in Austin also announced Hottle’s passing on social media, offering support services to her classmates and friends. “Please keep Kaylee’s loved ones in your thoughts as we mourn this tremendous loss together,” they wrote.
