LAVACA COUNTY, Texas – A tragic incident has unfolded in Lavaca County, where Travis Hill, a Justice of the Peace, died by suicide shortly after being arrested on serious felony charges related to sex crimes. This shocking event has raised many questions and concerns within the community.

Travis Hill, who not only served as a Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace but was also a practicing criminal defense attorney, faced three felony charges. Authorities, including the United States Marshals and local law enforcement, were initially dispatched to apprehend him at a remote location in Gonzales County. During this encounter, Hill took his own life, as confirmed by the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office.

Hill’s initial arrest occurred on July 11, raising concerns about why law enforcement was sent to arrest him again shortly before his death. The details surrounding this second encounter remain unclear.

Background and Investigation

Approximately six weeks prior to his death, the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office became aware of misconduct allegations against Hill. This led to a special investigation conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers, ensuring a thorough and impartial look into the situation.

Due to Hill’s dual role as an elected official and a criminal defense attorney, the local Lavaca County Attorney’s Office recused itself from the case, resulting in the Texas Attorney General’s Office taking over the prosecution. This move was made to maintain transparency and objectivity in the legal proceedings.

The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities have indicated that more charges could potentially be filed. Sheriff Steven E. Greenwell emphasized the commitment to conducting the investigation with professionalism and integrity, stating, “No one is above the law, and no one is beneath its protection.”

In light of these events, the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging anyone with information relevant to the ongoing investigation to come forward. They can reach the DPS Texas Rangers or contact the Lavaca County Crime Stoppers through their website or Facebook page. The LCSO Criminal Investigation Division is also available at 361-217-6753, allowing for anonymous tips.
