Leaders from NATO allies, Ukraine, and Israel recently came together to honor U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, recognizing him as a steadfast friend and advocate for trans-Atlantic relations. This tribute came shortly after the senator’s passing, highlighting his influential role in global foreign policy, particularly during the presidency of Donald Trump.
Just days before his death, Graham visited Ukraine, where he announced an agreement with the Trump administration aimed at advancing a new package of sanctions against Russia. This was a continuation of his longstanding commitment to supporting Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Graham had been a vital ally, having visited Ukraine ten times since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022. “Lindsey was a true defender of freedom and the values that make our world safer,” Zelenskyy expressed, emphasizing the senator’s dedication during critical times.
His reputation extended even to NATO’s eastern edge, where concerns about Russian aggression are particularly acute. Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna remarked, “Estonia will remember him as a steadfast friend, a strong supporter of NATO’s eastern flank, and an unwavering advocate for Ukraine.” Similarly, Latvia’s Foreign Minister Baiba Braže praised Graham as one of the strongest proponents of NATO and transatlantic relations.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys reflected on Graham’s impact, stating, “His commitment to the values of democracy, security, and international partnership earned him the respect and gratitude of many across Europe.” Finnish President Alexander Stubb also shared his sentiments, calling Graham “a personal friend, a supporter of NATO and Ukraine, a Transatlanticist.”
Graham’s political career was marked by evolution; he transitioned from a critic of Trump to a trusted ally, advising the president on pivotal foreign policy issues such as Iran and Russia. His advocacy for isolating Iran and limiting its nuclear ambitions was widely acknowledged, alongside his support for military actions aimed at protecting U.S. interests.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed profound grief over Graham’s passing, calling him “a great friend of Israel” and reinforcing the idea that Graham’s commitment to U.S.-Israel relations was unwavering. Netanyahu stated, “Israel has lost one of its greatest friends. America has lost a great patriot. I have lost a beloved friend.”
The reaction to Graham’s death was not universally positive. Iranian state television’s coverage was notably hostile, marking his passing with celebratory remarks that underscored the contentious nature of his foreign policy stance towards Iran.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune highlighted Graham’s service both in the Air Force and Congress, stating, “He was a strong advocate for the United States and a strong ally to freedom-loving countries across the globe.” Thune encapsulated Graham’s legacy by noting his belief in America’s capacity to do good in the world, dedicating his life to that cause.
