LAS VEGAS – Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated return against Max Holloway at UFC 329 ended abruptly at just 1:09 of the first round due to a knee injury, leaving fans and analysts in shock.
Competing for the first time in over five years, McGregor showcased his trademark explosiveness with a flying left roundhouse kick right at the bell. However, the excitement quickly turned to concern when he landed awkwardly on his right knee.
Despite attempting to engage Holloway (28-9-0) with a couple more strikes, it became evident that McGregor (22-7-0) was unable to continue, prompting referee intervention.
In a candid social media post, McGregor expressed his disbelief and frustration: “My head gasket is gone. Destroyed,” he lamented. “I had no injury going into the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”
UFC President Dana White supported McGregor’s account, noting that no prior injuries were evident during the ceremonial weigh-in held just a day earlier. “Five years off in this sport is rough,” White remarked, speculating about a possible blown ACL injury.
Holloway, who was favored to win the bout, shared his perspective on the fight, relaying that he urged the referee to stop the contest as McGregor appeared to be in distress. “During the fight, you could see his demeanor change,” Holloway observed. “When I saw him hurt, I said, ‘Call this, he’s hurt.’”
Holloway concluded by wishing McGregor a speedy recovery, highlighting the camaraderie often found in the sport despite fierce competition.
The betting landscape reflected Holloway’s advantage, with him closing at -300 at Bet MGM Sportsbook, while McGregor was a +240 underdog.
In a nostalgic moment, McGregor made his entrance to the ring with the iconic sounds of Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize” resonating through the arena, as he faced a sold-out crowd, marking his first fight in exactly five years.
The event also featured Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham as a surprise guest ring girl, delighting fans as she showcased her popular finger point from a recent game against the Phoenix Mercury.
In undercard action, Liverpool’s Paddy Pimblett (24-4-0) made headlines by defeating Benoit Saint Denis (17-4-0) with a stunning first-round TKO in just 52 seconds, showcasing his readiness and skill.
Mario Bautista (18-3-0) also made waves in the bantamweight division, securing a unanimous decision victory over Cory Sandhagen (18-7-0) after displaying strategic pressure throughout the match.
Brandon Royval (18-9-0) showcased his grappling prowess with a rear-naked choke submission against Lone’er Kavanagh (10-2-0) in a thrilling flyweight bout.
The main card kicked off with an unexpected turn of events as King Green (36-17-0) pulled off a dramatic TKO against Terrance McKinney (18-9-0) just seconds before the first round concluded, showcasing the unpredictable nature of MMA.
