HOUSTON – In a historic display of football prowess, Morocco secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Canada in the World Cup round of 16 on Saturday. This triumph marks Morocco as the first African nation to reach the quarterfinals more than once, solidifying its place in football history.
This achievement follows Morocco’s groundbreaking run in the 2022 tournament, where they became the first African team to reach the semifinals. The team’s consistent performance showcases their growing prominence on the global stage.
The match remained scoreless until the 50th minute when Azzedine Ounahi scored the opener. After receiving a free kick from Achraf Hakimi, Ounahi executed a right-footed shot through a crowded box, finding the bottom right corner. This goal not only shifted the momentum but also invigorated the Moroccan fans.
Ounahi wasn’t finished there; he doubled Morocco’s lead in the 82nd minute with another well-placed shot from the middle of the box, following a precise pass from Brahim Díaz. Soufiane Rahimi capped off the scoring with a goal in stoppage time, sealing a resounding victory for the Moroccan squad.
With this victory, Morocco now advances to face the winner of the Paraguay-France match scheduled for Thursday at Boston Stadium, continuing their quest for World Cup glory.
For Canada, this match concludes a memorable run in the tournament. As co-hosts, they achieved their first-ever knockout round victory with a 1-0 win over South Africa, capturing the hearts of a nation traditionally more focused on hockey than soccer.
Morocco, currently ranked sixth in FIFA rankings, had previously dispatched the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout to reach the round of 16. This latest victory further solidifies their status as a formidable team in international football.
Despite the loss, Canada had opportunities to score late in the game. Jonathan David’s free kick in the 78th minute soared over the crossbar, while Tajon Buchanan’s long-range shot was expertly saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who showcased his talent with three crucial saves during the match. Bounou, notably born in Canada to Moroccan parents, played a key role in his team’s defensive strategy.
This match was a rematch from the last World Cup, where Morocco had previously triumphed over Canada 2-1 during the group stage. The physicality of the encounter was evident, as both teams received a total of eight yellow cards, with four issued to each side, highlighting the intensity of the competition.
Morocco’s midfielder Ismael Saibari was forced to leave the match due to injury in the 22nd minute, adding a layer of challenge to the Moroccan squad as they advanced through this critical stage of the tournament.
