SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs are making headlines with their recent coaching staff changes. According to notable sports journalists Shams Charania and Pete Thamel from ESPN, the Spurs have secured the services of Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame coach Billy Donovan as their new lead assistant coach. This strategic move comes ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season, signaling a new chapter for the Spurs.
Billy Donovan’s appointment is particularly significant as he will be stepping into a position previously held by Sean Sweeney. Sweeney, who was the Spurs’ associate head coach, recently transitioned to become the 16th head coach of the Orlando Magic, further emphasizing the competitive landscape of NBA coaching.
This move is not without its history. In 2007, Donovan famously accepted the head coaching position with the Orlando Magic but ultimately chose to remain at the University of Florida, where he achieved remarkable success. Over his 19 seasons with the Gators, he compiled an impressive record of 467 wins, led the team to four NCAA Final Four appearances, and clinched back-to-back national championships.
In 2015, Donovan made the leap to the NBA, taking over as head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Under his leadership, the Thunder reached the Western Conference Finals in his first season, facing off against the Golden State Warriors. Despite taking a commanding 3-1 series lead, the Thunder ultimately fell short, illustrating the unpredictable nature of playoff basketball.
During his tenure in Oklahoma City, Donovan’s teams remained competitive but were unable to replicate the success of that first season. After parting ways with the franchise at the end of the COVID-affected 2019-20 season, Donovan was promptly hired by the Chicago Bulls, where he served as head coach for six seasons. Despite facing challenges, the Bulls did make a single postseason appearance under his guidance.
In recognition of his contributions to basketball, Donovan was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025, solidifying his legacy in the sport. Prior to his coaching career, Donovan was also a standout player for the 1987 Providence College Friars, coached by the legendary Rick Pitino, a testament to his deep-rooted connection to the game.
The Spurs’ decision to bring in a coach of Donovan’s caliber signals their commitment to building a strong coaching staff and enhancing their competitiveness in the league. As the 2026-27 season approaches, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this new partnership unfolds.
