SAN ANTONIO – Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez, an undefeated boxer from San Antonio, steps into the ring for a high-stakes bout against WBA Bantamweight Champion Antonio Vargas on Saturday night in Glendale, Arizona. With a record of 23 wins and 16 knockouts, Rodriguez is eager to make his mark in the bantamweight division.

This fight marks Rodriguez’s first appearance in the ring this year and his debut in the bantamweight division, having recently vacated his WBC, WBA, and WBO super flyweight titles. The decision to move up to the 118-pound category signifies his intent to challenge himself at a higher level.

At a recent press conference held at Desert Diamond Arena, Rodriguez expressed the importance of pursuing ambitious challenges in his boxing career. “(I’m) constantly trying to challenge myself,” he stated, emphasizing that fights lacking a championship title do not ignite his passion for training.

The 26-year-old boxer has committed to competing solely in the bantamweight division, leaving behind the option to revert back to the lighter 115-pound class. “I’m feeling much better at this weight class … the fact that I don’t have to lose that extra three pounds,” Rodriguez remarked, projecting confidence in his ability to deliver a standout performance.

Rodriguez’s transition to bantamweight raises questions about his capability to maintain dominance at this new level. His aspirations include eventually facing Naoya Inoue, currently recognized as the undisputed No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Rodriguez is undeterred by the challenge, asserting, “I feel like I haven’t even shown 50% of what I’m capable of.”

The odds are heavily in Rodriguez’s favor, with betting lines ranging from -2000 to -3335, reflecting widespread confidence in his ability to win against Vargas. “The tougher the opponent, then the bigger my performance,” he added, looking forward to showcasing his skills against Vargas.

Fans can catch the Rodriguez vs. Vargas fight live on DAZN, with coverage starting at 6 p.m. CT. As anticipation builds for this matchup, boxing enthusiasts are eager to see if “Bam” can capture the championship and solidify his status as a formidable force in the bantamweight division.
