What to watch in Tuesday’s primaries as Trump’s endorsement is put to the test

WASHINGTON – Is there a future in politics for Republicans who cross President Donald Trump? The political landscape is shifting, and recent events suggest that the answer may be no. Trump has demonstrated a formidable ability to rally his base against those who oppose him, leading to a series of electoral defeats for Republican adversaries.

The upcoming primary on Tuesday serves as a critical test of Trump’s influence. Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, a known critic of the president, faces a Trump-backed challenger. Massie has previously stirred controversy by advocating for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, opposing military action in Iran, and voting against Trump’s tax legislation.

As voters in Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Oregon, and Pennsylvania prepare to cast their ballots, several key questions emerge about the future of the GOP and the ramifications of defying Trump.

Will Trump’s Endorsements Maintain Their Power?

Trump’s endorsements have historically influenced Republican primary outcomes, even as his overall popularity has waned. In Kentucky, he is supporting Ed Gallrein, a first-time candidate, against the incumbent Massie. Massie is attempting to persuade Republicans that they can support both him and Trump, a strategy that has struggled in other races across the nation.

The recent political history underscores Trump’s decisive role in primaries. For instance, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana failed to advance in his race after estranging himself from Trump due to his impeachment vote. Additionally, Trump successfully ousted five out of seven Indiana Republicans who voted against his redistricting strategy earlier this month.

Trump’s Influence in Georgia

In Georgia, Trump’s endorsement power faces a significant challenge in the gubernatorial race. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, backed by Trump, is up against billionaire Rick Jackson, who has invested over $83 million into his campaign. This situation presents a unique test of Trump’s influence amid substantial financial backing for his opponent.

While Trump has remained neutral in the Senate race in Georgia, he has endorsed Rep. Barry Moore for the Senate to replace Tommy Tuberville, who is vying for governor.

A Test for Pennsylvania’s Governor

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s political strength will also be tested as he backs a slate of House candidates aiming to flip Republican-controlled seats. His endorsed candidates include prominent local figures like Paige Cognetti, the mayor of Scranton, and Bob Brooks, president of the state firefighters’ union. However, Shapiro’s endorsements have not deterred challengers from within his own party, indicating a competitive primary landscape.

Political Divides in Georgia

Georgia presents an interesting case study on the divergent paths available to Republicans who defy Trump. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and former Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan openly criticized Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Raffensperger is running for governor as a Republican, while Duncan has switched parties and is now running as a Democrat, both trying to convince voters to overlook their past positions.

Raffensperger is investing heavily in rebranding himself to Republican voters, while Duncan is attempting to regain trust from Democratic constituents after shifting his stance on key issues like abortion rights and gun control.

Chaos in Alabama

Alabama’s primary elections face confusion, as recent decisions may result in votes being discarded. Republican Governor Kay Ivey postponed the primaries until August 11, following a Supreme Court ruling that weakened the Voting Rights Act. This situation has led to a scramble among Republican officials to redraw congressional boundaries, prompting protests from civil rights activists.

While ballots for four of Alabama’s seven congressional districts may not be counted, voters will still participate in elections for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th congressional districts, along with U.S. Senate and local offices.

Democratic Leadership Concerns

The death of Rep. David Scott from Georgia, the fourth Democrat to pass away in office this term, reflects growing concerns about the Democratic Party’s aging leadership. Scott was 80 and sought a 13th term, but his passing raises questions about the future direction of the party and its ability to engage younger voters.

Scott’s name will appear on the ballot in the upcoming primary, yet votes for him will not count. A special election scheduled for July 28 will determine who completes the remainder of his term, with a runoff on August 25 if no candidate secures a majority.
