MAVERICK COUNTY, Texas – A man from San Antonio, Keryan Rashad Jones, has been accused of a tragic shooting incident at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass late last year. This incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to five others. Recently, it was determined that Jones is competent to stand trial.

Jones, 35, faces serious charges including murder, capital murder for multiple persons, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. These charges stem from the shooting that occurred on September 27, 2025.

During a court session in Maverick County, Judge Maribel Flores stated that Jones will undergo an insanity examination to further assess his mental state. This is an important step in the legal process as it helps determine whether he was mentally fit at the time of the shooting.

Interestingly, the state has decided not to pursue the death penalty in this case. When Jones was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.

Looking ahead, a status hearing has been scheduled for June 3 at 10 a.m. to discuss the case further.

Background

Following the shooting, Jones was apprehended in Wilson County, which is about 170 miles away from the casino. He was later extradited back to Maverick County to face the charges.

According to a statement from the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas, the five individuals who were injured during the shooting were taken to medical facilities in both Eagle Pass and San Antonio for treatment.

Despite the tragic events, the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel reopened just six days after the incident on October 3. Located approximately 149 miles southwest of San Antonio, the casino serves as an entertainment hub for many in the region.

The community continues to grapple with the aftermath of this incident, highlighting the ongoing conversation about safety and security in public spaces.
