KENDALL COUNTY, Texas – A tragic head-on car crash on State Highway 46 has left a family devastated and raised serious concerns about road safety in the area. The crash resulted in the deaths of three family members: Roger Waid, his wife Patricia, and their 14-year-old daughter Blake, on October 29, 2024.

The accident was caused by 60-year-old Carl Galm, who was reportedly driving at an alarming speed of around 93 miles per hour. Galm tried to overtake a line of vehicles in a no-passing zone and collided with the Waid family’s Toyota Corolla, resulting in the tragic loss of their lives.

Recently, Galm pleaded guilty in court and was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his actions. However, family members expressed their dissatisfaction with the sentence length, understanding that no amount of time served can bring back their loved ones. “No term will bring them back,” said Andrew Saenz, a relative.

This tragic incident has also sparked discussions about the safety of State Highway 46, which has seen 13 fatalities over the past decade. Family and community members have raised concerns about the road’s design and its dangerous reputation. Kendall County officials are now urging the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to consider improvements, such as the installation of a center median to help prevent future accidents.

“This accident happened nearly a year and a half ago, and since then we’ve had subsequent deaths,” said Saenz. “It’s a dangerous stretch of road.” As the community waits for potential changes to be made, the Waid family is focusing on healing and cherishing the memories of their loved ones.

In moments of sadness, family members find comfort in their faith, believing that Roger, Patricia, and Blake are now with their Lord. “What gives us peace is that Roger, Pat, and Blake are with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” said Torres, another family member.

While Galm is eligible for parole after serving half of his sentence, the Waid family hopes that raising awareness about road safety will prevent future tragedies. Their story serves as a reminder of the importance of safe driving and the impact that reckless behavior can have on innocent lives.
