BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A tragic case in Bexar County has drawn attention after a woman named Heather Rodriquez, 37, accepted a plea deal this week. She is accused of allowing three dogs to attack and kill a 1-year-old boy named Jiryiah Johnson in October 2024.

According to court records, Rodriquez is facing serious legal consequences, with charges that could lead to a prison sentence ranging from two to 20 years for a second-degree felony. Her official sentencing is scheduled for June 1, where the court will determine her punishment.

The incident occurred on October 7, 2024, at a home located in the 9700 block of Spruce Ridge Drive in northeast Bexar County. Authorities reported that Rodriquez was babysitting Jiryiah Johnson at the time. However, instead of supervising him closely, she left him in a room with three dogs while she went out, leaving her 13-year-old daughter in charge.

In a desperate attempt to protect her younger brother, the teenager struggled against the dogs, but they managed to break into the room. Tragically, Jiryiah Johnson was pronounced dead the following day, October 8, 2024.

Following this devastating incident, a judge ordered the euthanasia of the three dogs involved, emphasizing the severity of the attack and the need for public safety.

The Johnson family did not stop there; in May 2025, they filed a $1 million wrongful death lawsuit against Rodriquez and Blackstone Inc., the company that owns the rental property. This lawsuit highlights the family’s grief and seeks accountability for the circumstances surrounding such a tragic loss.

This case raises critical questions about responsibility, safety, and the importance of proper supervision, especially when it comes to young children and pets. It serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with caring for others, particularly the vulnerable members of our society.
