BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after confessing to the murder of his partner over a year ago. This case highlights the serious consequences of violent actions and the importance of safety in relationships.

Last week, Judge Kristina Escalona, who oversees cases in Bexar County’s 186th Criminal District Court, sentenced 27-year-old Alberto Rafael Ferrer Cabrera. The sentencing came after Cabrera admitted to the crime, which took place on February 1, 2025.

According to the San Antonio police report, Cabrera called 911 at around 5 a.m., claiming he had stabbed his 81-year-old partner, Donald Atha Weynandt. Responding officers arrived at the home located in the 100 block of Felisa Street and found Weynandt with a fatal stab wound to the throat. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Court records indicate that Cabrera only faces the 2025 murder charge, with previous charges related to his immigration status no longer visible in the online court system.

While investigators did not find a clear motive for Weynandt’s murder, the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office noted that Cabrera was under significant stress regarding the process of bringing his 4-year-old son from Colombia to the United States. This situation may have contributed to the tragic incident.

District Attorney Joe Gonzales expressed that Weynandt deserved to live a life filled with safety and dignity. He emphasized his office’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for acts of violence, underscoring the importance of justice in the community.

This case serves as a reminder of the grave consequences that can arise from domestic violence and the need for supportive resources for those experiencing such situations. Communities must work together to ensure safety and offer help to those in distress.
