Hello parents, teachers, and students! Here’s a fun experiment that Sherlock Holmes would be proud of, exploring the science of chemical reactions!

Be sure to check out GMSA@9 on Wednesdays when Meteorologist Sarah Spivey does the demonstrations and explains the science behind it.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED

HOW IT WORKS

Let’s dive into the science behind our invisible ink experiment! The key materials you’ll be using are baking soda and grape juice. Did you know that baking soda is classified as a base while grape juice is an acid? Here’s where the magic happens: when you combine an acid and a base, a chemical reaction occurs!

In our case, when you apply the baking soda and water solution to paper and let it dry, it becomes invisible. However, when you then brush over it with grape juice, a chemical reaction causes the area with the baking soda to turn a darker color, revealing your secret message. This transformation not only demonstrates a fun trick but also teaches the fundamentals of acids and bases.

SCIENCE WITH SARAH

Join Meteorologist Sarah Spivey as she explains these scientific principles in a fun and engaging way! Tune in to GMSA@9 every Wednesday to watch the demonstrations and learn more about the fascinating world of science.
