SAN ANTONIO – Muertos Fest is set to return to Hemisfair this October, welcoming thousands to downtown San Antonio for one of the largest Día de los Muertos festivals in the United States.
This vibrant festival celebrates the rich traditions of Día de los Muertos, a holiday honoring deceased loved ones through art, live music, and the creation of over 80 community altars. Each altar serves as a unique tribute, showcasing the creativity and heartfelt memories of those who participate.
Designed to be a welcoming space for families and visitors, Muertos Fest provides an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones while engaging with the cultural customs that are central to this holiday.
Jim Mendiola, the artistic director of Galaxy Productions, shared insights on the evolution of Muertos Fest during an interview on GMSA at 9. He highlighted how the festival has expanded over the years and what attendees can look forward to this year.
The festival kicks off on Friday, October 23, with “¡Presente! A Night to Remember,” running from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. This evening will feature a sensory-friendly altar viewing from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., making it accessible for all attendees.
The celebration continues on Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., with a special Día de los Muertos procession scheduled for 7 p.m. Attendees can expect a lively atmosphere filled with music and dance, creating a truly immersive cultural experience.
Wrapping up the festivities, Sunday, October 25, will see the festival open from noon to 9 p.m., featuring another Día de los Muertos procession at 3 p.m. This final day promises to be as engaging and memorable as the previous ones.
