CIBOLO, Texas – A senior community in Cibolo celebrated National Night Out with a special National Day Out on Tuesday. The event aimed to strengthen community bonds and enhance safety awareness.

Before the evening’s neighborhood block parties, Cibolo Police Department Chief Thedrick Andres visited El Sereno Senior Living to launch the city’s observance. “It’s an opportunity for us to get a report card on how we’re doing in the community by building relationships, welcoming those new to the city, and then advocating for their partnership as we keep this community safe,” he said.

While many National Night Out events focus on families and new residents, Chief Andres emphasized the importance of including older community members. “It is important that we continue to let them know that they’re loved and cared about,” he stated. “Our seniors are absolutely appreciated here in Cibolo. They’re some of our greatest partners.”

Local seniors are not just passive participants; they actively contribute to the community, with many involved in the city’s Citizens Police Academy. El Sereno resident Grace Bussell is one such participant. “I think we’re one of the biggest supporters for the department,” Bussell shared, emphasizing her commitment over her four years with the academy.

Bussell, who comes from a law enforcement family, encourages others to be proactive in their community. “Don’t complain, get out and do what you can do,” she advised. Through her involvement in the academy, she has helped organize projects that support local first responders, such as providing LED lights for police vehicles.

Chief Andres expressed that National Night Out is a valuable opportunity for officers to engage with residents before emergencies arise, fostering trust and transparency. “This night is for us to touch every area of Cibolo, to not only get a report card but to explain to our residents why Cibolo is one of the safest cities in Texas, and we believe it’s through community engagement,” he explained.

By promoting inclusivity and active participation, Cibolo’s National Night Out reflects a commitment to building a strong, supportive community where every resident, regardless of age, plays a vital role in safety and wellbeing.
