SAN ANTONIO – With the introduction of Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA), educators in Texas are exploring new avenues for income through tutoring services. This initiative allows teachers to leverage their skills in a way that benefits both them and the families they serve.
The state of Texas is currently accepting applications from various education-related vendors interested in partnering with families who wish to utilize TEFA funds. This expansive list includes tutoring services, therapy options, and even essential items such as uniforms and school supplies. Notably, educators may find themselves well-suited to apply for this opportunity.
Ehizogie Ero-Brown, a certified educator and private tutor, recently took the step to apply for TEFA vendor approval. Her business, “Learn and Play,” aims to be featured on the state’s vendor database, providing her with a platform to connect with families seeking educational support.
Ero-Brown shared her experience, stating that the application process was straightforward. So far, her only expense has been a nominal fee of $37 for the required fingerprinting. She is now in a waiting period to confirm her approval status.
“Yes, go ahead, register, and then when you’re ready, you’re already on the database,” Ero-Brown advised. “You can market yourself and say I’m TEFA’s trusted. I’m on the vendor list for TEFA.”
Ero-Brown is also part of the School Discovery Network, an online community that provides resources and support for educators. Within this network, many teachers have voiced their inquiries regarding the state’s requirements and the application process for becoming a TEFA vendor.
Her recommendation for fellow educators is to apply early, even if they are not prepared to launch their services immediately. Ero-Brown noted that the review process might take about four to six weeks, and if approved, her business will be listed on the TEFA website.
However, she emphasized that simply being listed as a TEFA vendor is just the beginning. Each vendor must also engage in marketing efforts to attract clients and build their tutoring business.
To provide educators with valuable insights and practical guidance, the School Discovery Network will host a teacher town hall titled “Beyond the Classroom: Building Your Educational Business with TEFAs.”
This informative event is scheduled for Thursday, April 16, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 3011 N. St. Mary’s Street. Participants will receive tips on navigating the vendor application process and effective marketing strategies for promoting tutoring and other educational services post-approval.
Importantly, there is no deadline for vendors to apply, allowing educators the flexibility to take advantage of this opportunity at their own pace.
