SAN ANTONIO – On Thursday, the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) will conduct a vital statewide public warning system drill aimed at testing the effectiveness of emergency alert systems across Texas. This exercise is part of a broader effort to ensure that residents are well-prepared for potential disasters and can receive timely and accurate information when it matters most.
Between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Texans may receive emergency alert text messages on their mobile devices, see alerts broadcasted on local television or radio stations, or hear outdoor warning sirens. It is important for residents to note that no action is required on their part during this drill.
This drill is crucial for officials to assess the functionality of alert systems and pinpoint areas that may require improvement. Chief Nim Kidd of TDEM emphasized the importance of regular training and testing in building community readiness for disasters. “Conducting drills to reaffirm procedures, promote confidence in technological tools, and identify potential shortfalls is key to ensuring these systems operate with precision, accuracy, and timeliness when they are needed the most,” Kidd stated in a recent news release.
Furthermore, the City of San Antonio is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to create or update their personal or family disaster plans. Having a well-thought-out plan can significantly enhance safety and preparedness, especially in the face of natural disasters or emergencies.
For more information on how to prepare for emergencies, residents can visit the TDEM website or contact local emergency management officials. Being informed and ready is key to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Texans.
