NEWTON, Iowa – Ty Gibbs showcased remarkable composure and strategic acumen during the NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway, clinching victory amidst intense competition. Gibbs, a 23-year-old rising star and grandson of legendary NFL coach and NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs, didn’t second-guess his crew chief’s pivotal pit call that ultimately secured his win.
“I can’t do anything about it, so you just run with it,” Gibbs remarked, reflecting on the high-pressure decisions made during the race.
Utilizing a late pit strategy, Gibbs managed to fend off his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell over the final 20 laps, winning the race by a narrow margin of 0.253 seconds. This victory marks Gibbs’ second win of the season and his career, following his first triumph at Bristol on April 12.
Both Gibbs and Bell pitted with 60 laps remaining in the 350-lap race. However, while Bell opted for four tires, Gibbs made the bold choice to take just two right-side tires, allowing him to emerge ahead. As the leader Ross Chastain pitted on Lap 330, Gibbs seized the lead and successfully defended it against Bell’s late charge.
Tyler Allen, Gibbs’ crew chief, explained the rationale behind the two-tire strategy. “We knew after practice the left sides weren’t wearing much and they tended to refire OK,” he stated. “So in terms of coming into the race, it was definitely a viable option.” Gibbs echoed the sentiment, appreciating the aggressive call particularly given their points situation.
Entering this race ranked fourth in the season standings, Gibbs’ victory propelled him into second place, now 103 points behind teammate Denny Hamlin. Despite a setback earlier in the race due to a jack malfunction during his first pit stop, which set him back to 28th, Gibbs displayed resilience and focus to climb back to the front.
Bell, who led the race for 108 laps and finished second, acknowledged Gibbs’ performance. “Ty did a really good job,” he remarked. The race also saw pole-sitter Ryan Blaney, who led a race-high 129 laps, finish third, while Josh Berry and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five.
In contrast, Tyler Reddick’s challenges continued as he crashed into Erik Jones just four laps in, finishing last in the 36-car field. Reddick expressed regret over the incident, attributing it to a rare mistake on his part.
Denny Hamlin faced his own difficulties during the race, battling brake issues that forced him to start from the back of the field. However, he managed to rally back to a fifth-place finish, showcasing his driving prowess under pressure. “I just had white knuckles every lap, not knowing where my car was going to land when I got in the corner,” Hamlin described the experience, highlighting the challenges of racing without reliable brakes.
