ATHENS, Ga. – In a commanding performance, No. 2 Georgia showcased its strength by defeating Vanderbilt 38-14 on Saturday. The Bulldogs’ quarterback, Gunner Stockton, threw for an impressive 295 yards and three touchdowns, solidifying his reputation as a rising star in college football.

Georgia made an impactful start, scoring a touchdown on their opening drive for the fourth consecutive game this season. Stockton connected with Landon Roldan on a two-yard touchdown pass, establishing an early lead.

Vanderbilt, led by backup quarterback Blaze Berlowitz, displayed resilience by answering back with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Junior Sherrill, leveling the game at 7-7. This marked the first time this season that a Georgia opponent scored in the first quarter, as the Bulldogs had previously outscored opponents 63-0 in that period.

Georgia quickly regained control, with back-to-back rushing touchdowns from Chauncey Bowens and Jaden Redell before halftime. The Bulldogs capitalized on a blocked Vanderbilt field goal attempt, showcasing their defensive prowess.

Vanderbilt managed to narrow Georgia’s lead to 21-14 just before halftime, thanks to a two-yard rushing touchdown from Sedrick Alexander. However, Georgia’s dominance was evident as they extended their lead in the third quarter with a methodical 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive.

The Commodores faced a critical turning point late in the third quarter when a catch by Sherrill was ruled incomplete after a review, resulting in a turnover on downs. Georgia’s defense held firm, preventing Vanderbilt from scoring for the remainder of the game.

Adversity Breeds Strength

Head coach Kirby Smart emphasized the importance of facing adversity, especially with a challenging upcoming road game against No. 7 Alabama. After dominating their first four opponents by a combined 166 points, Georgia needed this tough contest to prepare for the SEC challenges ahead. “To play well in this conference, you’ve got to be able to take as many punches as you give,” Smart stated. “I thought our guys really responded well today.”

Opportunities and Rising Stars

In the absence of key running backs Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens, Dwight Phillips Jr. seized his moment with a stellar performance, accumulating 27 rushing yards and leading the team with five receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown. “He capitalized on a lot of his moments today,” Smart noted, highlighting the importance of players stepping up when needed.

Sophomore running back Bo Walker also made headlines with a career-high 71 yards on just five carries, including a thrilling 59-yard run late in the game.

Key Takeaways

For Georgia, Ellis Robinson IV’s first interception of the season came at a crucial moment in the fourth quarter, effectively sealing the game for the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, despite the loss, Berlowitz’s performance (12-of-23 passing for 190 yards, one touchdown, and one interception) demonstrated his ability to keep the Commodores competitive, particularly in the first half.

Looking Ahead

Next week, Georgia will face a significant challenge against No. 10 Alabama, a matchup that promises to be a thrilling encounter. Meanwhile, Vanderbilt will look to rebound as they host No. 9 Ole Miss in their next outing.
