PARIS – In a recent press conference, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers expressed his confidence in the NFL’s decision-making regarding security measures for the upcoming game in Paris. This statement comes in light of ongoing civil unrest in the city, raising concerns among fans and players alike.
Rodgers, speaking from a downtown hotel shortly after the team’s arrival for their Sunday matchup against the New Orleans Saints at Stade de France, emphasized that the league is well aware of the current situation. “I definitely think that the NFL is alert to what’s going on. This game means a lot to the NFL. If it was unsafe, then I’m sure we wouldn’t be here,” he stated, reassuring fans about the game’s security protocols.
The Steelers’ morning practice at Stade de France was canceled due to adverse weather conditions, including wind and light rain. The team had planned an outdoor session at 11 a.m. local time, but it was called off just 90 minutes prior to its start.
Despite the recent unrest across Paris and other French cities, the NFL confirmed that Sunday’s game will proceed as scheduled. However, the U.S. State Department issued a security alert advising Americans in Paris for the NFL game to exercise caution. The alert noted, “Numerous groups submitted plans for protests on Saturday, October 24. Americans in Paris for the NFL game on Sunday, October 25 should also exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings.”
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the situation earlier in the week, revealing that he had been in contact with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and that the league is closely coordinating with Parisian and French authorities. “We’ve made all the preparations,” Goodell mentioned. “Protests are not unusual in France, as you know, and that’s something that we will be aware of and make sure that the appropriate arrangements are made.”
In light of security concerns, a weekend event for Steelers fans was canceled on Thursday. The Saints, who are based in Versailles, practiced at Stade Municipal Montbauron, which is outside of Paris.
Due to the same inclement weather that affected the Steelers, the Saints also faced disruptions. A league email informed journalists that, “Due to elevated wind and rain conditions, in accordance with local authorities, there will not be a media viewing portion during today’s Saints practice at Stade Municipal Montbauron.”
The Saints arrived in Paris directly from New York after their victory over the Giants last Sunday, with their accommodations and practice facility located in Versailles, highlighting the logistical challenges of hosting such a significant game in the midst of civil unrest.
As the weekend approaches, both teams and the NFL remain vigilant, prioritizing the safety of players and fans alike while preparing for an exciting matchup in one of the world’s most iconic sports venues.
