RALEIGH, N.C. – Logan Stankoven scored twice to continue his postseason tear, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a commanding 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in the opening game of the second-round series on Saturday night. Stankoven’s contributions were pivotal, showcasing his offensive prowess and establishing momentum for his team.
In addition to Stankoven, Jackson Blake also found the back of the net for the Hurricanes, while goaltender Frederik Andersen recorded his second shutout of the playoffs, stopping 19 shots. This marked the seventh postseason shutout of Andersen’s career, solidifying his reputation as a reliable last line of defense.
The Hurricanes have dominated their playoff journey thus far, remaining undefeated in their first five games. They jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first period against the Flyers, a crucial factor that ultimately contributed to their victory. “We had a good start, obviously,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour noted. “That’s what won the game.”
Having swept the Ottawa Senators in the first round, the Hurricanes faced the challenge of maintaining their momentum after a longer break while the Flyers battled through a six-game series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The contrast in preparation time sparked discussions about how the top seed in the Eastern Conference would perform against a well-fought opponent like the Flyers.
The Hurricanes wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Stankoven opened the scoring just 1:31 into the game with a deft redirect from the slot. “I think you’re just trying to get it off quick,” Stankoven said, reflecting on his scoring touch. “Obviously, it’s nice to have that confidence that comes with putting the puck in the net, and yeah, you just kind of build off of it.”
Blake followed suit at 7:30 of the first period, skillfully navigating through two defenders to slip a puck past Flyers goalie Dan Vladar, putting the Hurricanes firmly in control.
The Flyers, entering their first postseason since 2020, struggled to generate offensive pressure against a well-organized Hurricanes defense. Despite their efforts, Philadelphia could only muster nine shots on goal through the first two periods and failed to capitalize on four power-play opportunities, being outshot 3-2 during those chances. “We talked about it, we just didn’t live it on the ice,” Flyers coach Rick Tocchet remarked, highlighting the need for a quicker response to Carolina’s aggressive forecheck.
As the game progressed, tensions began to rise, resulting in multiple scrums and 10-minute misconduct penalties for Trevor Zegras and Nick Seeler of the Flyers, alongside Blake and Shayne Gostisbehere from Carolina.
Both teams faced notable absences; the Flyers were missing their leading goal-scorer Owen Tippett due to an undisclosed injury, while the Hurricanes had to cope without defenseman Alexander Nikishin, who suffered a concussion in their previous series. Carolina veteran Mike Reilly stepped up in Nikishin’s absence, contributing significantly with assists on both of Stankoven’s and Blake’s goals.
As the series continues, the Hurricanes aim to maintain their unbeaten streak, while the Flyers will need to regroup quickly ahead of Game 2, which is set for Monday night in Raleigh. The stakes are high, and both teams will look to capitalize on any opportunity to advance further in the playoffs.
