SALT LAKE CITY – In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the Vegas Golden Knights triumphed over the Utah Mammoth with a decisive 5-1 victory in Game 6 of their first-round playoff series on Friday night. Mitch Marner shone brightly with two goals and an assist, while Carter Hart stood strong in goal, making 21 saves to secure the win.

With this victory, the Golden Knights have advanced to the second round of the playoffs, where they will face the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks earned their spot by defeating the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 in Game 6 earlier in the week.

Under the new leadership of head coach John Tortorella, who took over after Bruce Cassidy was dismissed, the Golden Knights have shown remarkable resilience. They concluded the regular season with a record of 7-0-1 and have rebounded from a 2-1 series deficit against Utah by winning three consecutive games.

“This is what I hoped for,” Marner stated after the game. “There’s a lot more work to keep going.” Throughout the series, Marner tallied two goals and five assists, making Friday’s performance particularly noteworthy as it marked his first multi-goal playoff game since April 20, 2023.

Tortorella praised Marner’s performance, saying, “It was his best game of the series. He just looked comfortable.” The game began with Brett Howden scoring the opening goal, netting his fourth goal of the series in the first period. Colton Sissons later added a third-period goal for Vegas after Kailer Yamamoto of Utah managed to cut the lead to 2-1. Cole Smith sealed the game with an empty-net goal following Marner’s power play conversion.

“We’ve been here before,” remarked Vegas captain Mark Stone. “We don’t have the panic. Maybe some teams do. We can calm ourselves pretty quickly.” This composure was evident as the Golden Knights took control of the game, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure.

Karel Vejmelka, the goaltender for Utah, also made 21 saves but struggled to keep the Mammoth in the game after they had led in the third period of each of the first five games. “I didn’t have that in my bingo card,” said Utah coach Andre Tourigny. “I was really confident we would go to Vegas tomorrow.”

Howden opened the scoring with 4:58 left in the first period, taking advantage of a rebound from Marner’s shot. Marner then extended the lead to 2-0 just before the end of the second period, expertly placing a slap shot into the net after a prolonged offensive push by Vegas.

Reflecting on his goal, Marner said, “I’ve had a couple opportunities in that same area that I had just missed on. That’s why I just decided to quickly wind one up and see if I could get a clapper through.” This strategic thinking exemplifies the determination and skill that have characterized the Golden Knights’ playoff journey so far.
