OKLAHOMA CITY – In a concerning turn of events for the Los Angeles Lakers, guard Luka Doncic suffered a left hamstring injury during Thursday night’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Coach JJ Redick announced that Doncic, the league’s leading scorer, is set to undergo an MRI on Friday to assess the extent of the injury.
The injury occurred in the first half of the game, during a challenging matchup that ended with a lopsided score of 139-97 in favor of the Thunder. Redick mentioned that Doncic had reported discomfort during halftime and received treatment but was cleared to resume play. Unfortunately, his return was short-lived.
In a pivotal moment, Doncic attempted to make a move against Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams, but after spinning to take a shot, he abruptly stopped and fell to the ground, visibly in pain. With 7:39 left in the third quarter, he exited the game for good.
“Those things happen,” Redick commented, reflecting on the unpredictability of injuries in sports.
Williams, who himself has faced challenges this season with a right hamstring strain that caused him to miss 27 games, expressed empathy for Doncic. “It’s very, like, spooky in a way to see it happen to him, and I’m the one guarding him,” he said, highlighting the camaraderie and respect among players.
Choosing not to capitalize on the situation, Williams refrained from stealing the ball after Doncic appeared to be in distress. “I tried to let it go out of bounds and give them time to figure it out,” he noted. “That injury sucks. So I wish him a speedy recovery. Hope it’s not anything serious.”
Prior to the injury, Doncic had been showcasing his scoring prowess, averaging at least 40 points in five of the last seven games. However, he managed only 12 points on 3-for-10 shooting against Oklahoma City’s strong defensive strategy.
With the Lakers trailing 90-58 at the time of Doncic’s injury, the situation added to an already disappointing night for the team. “I mean, it’s something you never want to see as a teammate,” said Lakers forward Jake LaRavia. “So especially in a game like this, it was tough to see him go down. All the prayers for him … but yeah, you never want to see that.”
Additionally, Lakers guard Austin Reaves sustained a back injury during the game but continued to play, opting to sit out the fourth quarter with the outcome already determined. Redick described Reaves’ injury as occurring when he stretched for a loose ball, leading to discomfort in his intercostal area. “He was able to play through it … we’ll see how he feels tomorrow,” Redick remarked.
Looking ahead, the Lakers are set to host a rematch with the Thunder on April 7, hoping for a better performance and a healthy roster.
