SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS – Kimi Antonelli demonstrated his unwavering determination in the Formula 1 title race with a commanding victory at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday. Despite facing recent challenges, including reliability issues that allowed his teammate and title rival George Russell to close the gap, Antonelli made a significant statement with this win, especially after Russell’s unfortunate failure to finish the race.

Starting from pole position, Antonelli initially lost the lead to Charles Leclerc when a virtual safety car allowed the Ferrari driver to gain an advantage during pit stops. However, with ten laps remaining, Antonelli reclaimed the lead and secured his sixth career victory, marking a return to form after a previous win at the Monaco Grand Prix. This victory solidifies his 45-point lead in the championship standings and keeps the 19-year-old firmly on track to potentially become the youngest champion in F1 history.

“The momentum has always been there despite what happened in the previous races, and that’s why you just need to take one weekend at a time, because you never know what can happen,” Antonelli reflected on his performance. His impressive tally of six wins now places him joint-second among Italian F1 drivers, trailing only the legendary Alberto Ascari.

Leclerc finished in second place, managing to avoid a penalty despite a collision that affected Oscar Piastri’s McLaren. Max Verstappen secured third after a brief battle for the lead during a chaotic opening lap. Antonelli’s performance was further bolstered by Russell’s misfortune, who found himself stuck in a gravel trap on the first lap after being spun by Lewis Hamilton.

Heading into the race, Antonelli held a 25-point lead over Russell, which has now nearly doubled to a 45-point advantage over Hamilton, who has moved up to second place in the standings, and a commanding 50-point lead over Russell.

The atmosphere at Mercedes became tense following Russell’s unfortunate incident, with the driver attributing the mishap to issues with his car rather than Hamilton’s involvement. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff indicated that a software problem might have affected multiple cars with Mercedes engines, further complicating their race strategy.

Hamilton, who finished fourth, faced a challenging race that included a five-second penalty for colliding with Russell, along with heated discussions over strategy with his team and an incident involving a Ferrari mechanic during a pit stop. Following the race, Hamilton was under investigation for an “unsafe release,” although he expressed concern for the mechanic’s well-being after the incident.

Oscar Piastri managed to secure fifth place for McLaren, while Isack Hadjar impressed with a strong sixth-place finish for Red Bull, even after starting from the back of the grid due to a penalty. Lando Norris, starting from 13th due to a grid penalty, showcased his skill by climbing through the ranks and briefly leading the race, ultimately finishing seventh.

Gabriel Bortoleto rounded out the top eight for Audi, while Arvid Lindblad and Franco Colapinto completed the points-paying positions in ninth and tenth, respectively.
