NEW YORK – In a strategic move to bolster their offensive line amid a surge of injuries, the Jacksonville Jaguars have acquired guard Daniel Faalele from the New York Giants. This trade underscores the team’s commitment to maintaining a strong front as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season.
The Jaguars parted ways with a sixth-round draft pick in 2027 to secure Faalele, according to sources familiar with the transaction. The details were confirmed on the condition of anonymity, as neither team has officially announced the terms. Newsday was the first to report the agreement.
Following a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers, Jaguars head coach Liam Coen acknowledged the significance of the trade. “Just continuing to bring depth and guys that have played meaningful reps in this league,” Coen stated. “That’s something that you can’t have enough of. We came into camp with 16 (offensive linemen) and got down to about nine the other day.”
The urgency for reinforcements comes as Jacksonville faces the possibility of missing two starting linemen at the beginning of the season. Right guard Patrick Mekari recently underwent back surgery and may begin the season on short-term injured reserve. Meanwhile, starting right tackle Cole Van Lanen has been sidelined throughout training camp due to a knee issue and is currently listed on the physically unable to perform list.
In addition to Mekari and Van Lanen, backups Chuma Edoga, Walker Little, and rookie Emmanuel Pregnon have also missed practice time recently, though Pregnon has since returned to the field.
Faalele, a towering 6-foot-8, 380-pound lineman, had been taking second-team snaps in Giants training camp but saw his chances for a starting role diminish when the team drafted Francis “Sisi” Mauigoa with the 10th overall pick, intending to transition him to guard. Prior to his time in New York, Faalele had a solid track record with the Baltimore Ravens, starting all 17 games under coach John Harbaugh in 2021 and 2022.
Over his career, Faalele has played in 71 NFL games, all with the Ravens, establishing himself as a reliable presence on the offensive line. His experience and size are expected to significantly contribute to the Jaguars’ efforts to stabilize their line as they navigate the challenges of the upcoming season.
