WASHINGTON – Recent developments regarding the Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., have sparked controversy and allegations of vandalism. Following a renovation ordered by former President Donald Trump, the pool is now experiencing visible deterioration, raising questions about its maintenance and the circumstances surrounding its condition.

On a recent social media post, Trump claimed, “We’ve had some real problems with vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool.” He alleged that just three days prior, someone had destroyed the grass surrounding the pool and damaged the newly installed surface. However, he did not provide any evidence to support these claims.

Despite inquiries from various news outlets, agencies responsible for overseeing the National Mall—including the U.S. Park Police and the National Park Service—have not commented on the issue. In a related incident, David Hearn, a 67-year-old man from Bethesda, Maryland, was detained for approximately five hours after he reached into the pool while on a bike ride. Hearn, a former Olympic canoe racer, stated that he was merely curious about the peeling coating that had been applied to the bottom of the pool under Trump’s orders.

Hearn described his actions as an innocent act of curiosity, saying, “I’m a curious citizen. I reached down to see what it felt like. It was very rubbery.” After briefly touching the surface, he complied with a park worker’s request to refrain from further interaction, yet he was still apprehended by the National Guard and Park Police.

The Washington Post reported on Hearn’s arrest, noting that he is currently seeking legal assistance for his upcoming court appearance. This incident has further complicated perceptions of the Reflecting Pool’s condition, as many now question whether the peeling paint and algae blooms are the result of vandalism or inadequate maintenance following the expensive renovation, which cost taxpayers over $14 million.

Even if there were acts of vandalism, Hearn’s encounter does not fully explain the accumulation of algae and the extensive patches of loose blue paint that have surfaced in the pool. Trump has maintained that there is a deliberate effort to undermine the pool’s restoration, asserting that similar chemicals used on the National Mall were employed at the Reflecting Pool to sabotage the renovations. He referenced the recent discovery of discolored grass on the National Mall featuring the numbers “86 47,” which authorities suspect could be a threat against him, as they are investigating the incident.

These claims come in the wake of significant negative media coverage regarding the pool’s condition. Despite efforts to rejuvenate the Reflecting Pool ahead of the America 250 celebrations, it has been plagued by algae blooms that have reverted the water to a greenish hue, counteracting Trump’s intent to paint it “American flag blue.” Federal workers have been treating the pool with chemicals to combat the algae; however, chunks of the blue paint are now missing, revealing the underlying rocky surface.

As the situation unfolds, the Reflecting Pool remains a focal point of both civic pride and controversy, symbolizing the challenges of maintaining public monuments amid political tensions and environmental factors.
